Saturday will go down in Canisius High School rowing history as the Crusaders won two national titles – including the marquee event – at the 2025 Scholastic Rowing Association of America championships in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey.

Canisius won the championship in the Boys Senior Eight on the Cooper River, coming from behind and using a strong surge to the finish to prevail by more than a second.

The Senior Eight’s title capped off a dominant display of the Crusader program’s depth as Canisius also won the Boys Second Eight earlier Saturday afternoon. It is the first time Canisius has won either event at the SRAAs.

“This is a monumental achievement to win both events for the first time,” said CHS coach Jacob Filby ’14.

The Senior eight rowed a demo VESPOLI VHP56 and the Second eight rowed a VESPOLI loaner VHP55.

Vespoli USA is excited to welcome Olympic medalist, Micah Boyd, to the team. Micah joins us as the new west coast sales rep. You’ll be seeing him around boathouses and regattas this fall. He’s certainly an experienced oarsman, but also has extensive experience as a boatman and coach. His expertise will benefit all of us.

Micah grew up in the upper Mid-West where he started rowing at the Minnesota Boat Club. Then went to Wisconsin and won the 2002 Eastern Sprints Varsity 8+ in a Vespoli! He continued his rowing career at Penn AC and where he rowed at the 2005 World Championships and eventually at the 2008 Olympic Games in the Men’s Eight winning a bronze medal!

His coaching career started in the Southeast at Emory University, then continued at UNC-Chapel Hill coaching the men’s team for 6 years before moving to the Duke Women’s Rowing team. Micah found his way out west and has coached with the Waterford School in Utah and continues to live in Salt Lake City.

Each time you load up your team and hit the highway, you are likely moving well over $500k worth of equipment, not to mention the driver & passengers! Its imperative that your tow vehicle and trailer are in tip top condition. In this blog, we’ll be looking specifically at annual trailer maintenance.

Before you put your trailer away for the winter or before your first trip of the year, you should have the trailer brakes checked out and the bearings re-packed by a pro. In addition, you should also inspect the following and repair as needed:

• Operation of all the lights [running, turn, brake, hazards]
• Operation of the emergency “break away” braking system
• Condition, inflation, and age of all the tires [including spare]
• Test and lubricate the jack stand
• Condition of trailer bed and all fasteners
• Condition of rubber padding
